Sure, you can still pick up your kale and apples at your local farmers market. But these markets have expanded beyond produce—you can find everything from soap to beekeeping products, potted cacti to cinnamon buns. What’s even more delightful about them is that no one is ever in a bad mood at a farmers market. Customers are there to pick up their week’s worth of fresh supplies and support local, independent businesses, but they’re also there for the social aspect, meeting up with friends and neighbors. Vendors are friendly and happy to chat about everything they’re selling and how to best prepare and use them. If you’re even the least inclined to cook, farmers markets will inspire you with new ideas for your usual foods, or for something you’ve never tried before. When I’m traveling, I always try to spend some time at these markets, where local farmers head to the city and entice urbanites with their bounty. It’s the perfect place to check out what local folk are making and dining on, and to pick up snacks to keep you energized. Read about the top five farmers markets >
