Lured by the name, the image of an elephant (pink, of course), and the red, yellow, and black national flag, I decided that Belgian food was exactly what I wanted for dinner.
Founded by a 33-year IT professional and beer enthusiast, Bert & The Elephant boasts a deep selection of beers that perfectly matches the menu of Belgian specialties. The restaurant itself offers no indication of a Belgian eatery; in fact, it’s rather generic, with TV screens over the bar and no signs of the Belgian tricolor anywhere. A look at the menu, however, proves that you’re about to enjoy big flavors from this little European country.
The main courses are heavy on the mussels (a Belgian favorite), but if that’s not to your liking, you’re assured multiple other dishes that will tempt your palate.
Try This: Slake your thirst with a Delirium Tremens beer, rather hilariously named after the most severe and life-threatening form of alcohol withdrawal. Begin your meal with the hot honey pernil flatbread—slow-roasted pork, hot honey, gouda, red onion, and cilantro. Then go for the boulets liégeois with knöpfle—Belgian veal, pork, and beef meatballs, served in a creamy mushroom gravy made with Brugse Zot blond ale alongside egg noodles and bread.
