Raw Bar by Slapfish (Indianapolis, Indiana)

I took a seat at the bartop table across the open ceiling-to-floor windows. Behind me, diners at Raw Bar by Slapfish were enjoying an early dinner amid the hanging clear-glass globes and the brick and shiplap walls adorned with neon oysters. I bobbed my head to the background soundtrack—Aretha, Stevie, Chaka Khan—while dithering for far too long over deciding which of the tempting dishes I was in the mood for. Then I sat back, looked out at the historic building from 1873 across the street, and quizzically watched a unicyclist pedal his way down Massachusetts Avenue.

Fork and KnifeTry This: Oysters and other shellfish are the specialties, but even if you’re not a fan of those (or are allergic to them, like me), you’re still in for a treat. Whet your whistle on a warm fall day with a sweet, tart, refreshing Founders Rubaeus Raspberry Ale. It matches up well with your appetizer of crispy chicken sliders. Listen carefully to the daily’s specials, including the catches of the day. If one of them is barramundi, make sure to select it—it will be accompanied by mixed lettuces, carrots, cucumbers, radishes, grape tomatoes, and avocados with a honey-lime vinaigrette.
