Legal Sea Foods (Boston, Massachusetts)

Serving high-quality, fresh seafood since 1950, when it started as a family fish market just outside of Boston, Legal Sea Foods has now expanded to 25 locations. I found one in downtown Boston, just a couple of blocks from my hotel, and was soon treated to a very fine piscine dinner.

Comfortably seated in a corner, I had a good sightline to three of the five televisions behind the long bar that could seat 20. After ordering, I looked around at the black subway-tile walls and the wood floors while learning about Legal Sea Foods’ commitment to quality, excellence, and responsibility. While supporting the local New England fishing community, it sources its menu in alignment with practices grounded in transparency and traceability, prioritizing purchasing seafood that is both seasonal and certified for adherence to best practices in responsible sourcing, helping to encourage a healthy marine habitat.

On top of all that, the organization has contributed to the New England Aquarium and supports the Boston Children’s Hospital’s stem cell research program, which is searching for ways to cure blood cancer.

With ethics and a business mindset like that, discerning diners will be more than happy to support Legal Sea Foods, especially when the payoff is an excellent meal.

Fork and Knife

Try This: Begin your meal with a tasty Greek salad of romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, chickpeas, Kalamata olives, and a lemon-oregano vinaigrette. Then enjoy the grilled rainbow trout—you’ll get to choose a flavor style from a list of four (the lemon butter and crispy capers is quite nice) as well as a pair of sides from about a dozen—creamy whipped potatoes and perfectly steamed broccoli are the way to go.
