Brief but Beautiful: Art Deco Buildings Changed the World

Lasting only from around the 1910s through the 1930s, the Art Deco style ignited the world with strong lines, bold colors, and an unmistakable flair. From little diners to towering skyscrapers, Art Deco changed the built environment (as well as everything from jewelry to radios) for the better. This unmistakable short-lived style was interrupted by the Great Depression and mostly truncated by the outbreak of World War II, but it left behind a legacy of gorgeous buildings, the likes of which we will never see again. Natural History Museums That Will Rock Your World

Royal Alberta Museum, EdmontonIf you have children and want to take them to a museum, chances are that the best choice is a natural history museum, filled with items that would certainly entertain and, hopefully, educate them, from giant whales to massive dinosaur skeletons to glowing minerals. And if you don’t have kids? These museums are just as fascinating for adults, and I’m never disappointed by their exhibits of every aspect of nature on Earth that exists above, beside, and below me. Contemporary Fare in a Victorian Setting at Billy’s in Lincoln, Nebraska

After a guided tour of the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln — one of the top five U.S. state capitols — I headed back to my rental car, parked in the leafy residential neighborhood adjacent to the grounds of the capitol. The dull-green Victorian-style house with a pitched roof, lawn statues, and red, white, and blue bunting caught my attention. On second glance, I noticed the sign that read, Billy’s Restaurant. Intrigued by this location for a restaurant, I made an impromptu decision to lunch here. My choice was rewarded with a terrific meal in a lovely setting, and a new Iranian friend. Read more >
