Himalaya Curry and Grill (Lancaster, Pennsylvania)

Within 30 minutes of opening for dinner, Himalaya Curry and Grill was packed to capacity. It’s a cozy place, seating maybe about 30 diners, who, collectively, represent the surprising diversity of this city that I always associate with the Amish.

Its undeniable popularity stems from the excellent menu of Indian and Nepali dishes as well as the prompt service. Opened in 2012, the restaurant displays bronze elephants and deities in its décor, and plays soft instrumental music in the background. Patrons make lots of yummy noises; you’ll soon be one of them, too.

Fork and Knife

Try This: Order a refreshing mango iced tea and then decide if you want to partake in the buffet or select from the menu. If you opt for the latter, begin your Nepali feast with bara (wo)—two pan-fried lentil patties, accompanied by a spicy peanut sauce and finely curled shredded carrots and radishes. For your main course, choose the kukhura ko masu—traditional Nepali home-style boneless chicken breast curry with fresh cilantro, ginger, cumin, and light spices, served with basmati rice. Some warm garlic naan is a nice touch.
