Located smack in the middle of Georgia, Macon developed as a state transportation center during the 1800s. Post–Civil War, it emerged as a railroad transportation and textile factory hub, and the city’s economy boomed. In those following decades, the city added some impressive structures to its eminently walkable downtown. As a result, I was rather taken by this small city of about 160,000. Columbus’ earliest structures are the burial mounds of the indigenous peoples. Things have certainly changed since they occupied this area smack in the middle of Ohio from 1000 B.C. to 1700. Since 1812, the population of the state capital has grown every decade, unlike other large Ohio cities like Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo. With a population of over 900,000, it’s the largest city in Ohio. That means it needs a lot of buildings to conduct its business and house its citizens, and I had the opportunity to check out many of them during my one day here. Traveling around the eastern half of Kansas, I found that there always seemed to be a church steeple on the horizon somewhere, whether popping up over a small town or making up a key element of an urban skyline.
