Nobody seemed overly concerned about the expanding flood as it crept its way up from the Potomac River and King Street Park in Alexandria and started submerging the outdoor patios of the restaurants at the head of King Street. Apparently, this is what happens when it rains here. I took a look at the vast pool and noted the floodwater marks etched on a building, up to 12’. My destination for dinner that night, Mai Thai, was inaccessible. I would have to return another night, and I’m glad I did.
Dried out by the next day, Mai Thai was open for business. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a giant dragon head emerging from a lantern hanging from the ceiling. My corner seat next to the large windows granted views of unhurried pedestrians outside and of the restaurant itself, with its semi-industrial look spread out over two floors. “Welcome to a journey of authentic Thai cuisine” is the mantra of this restaurant, and it’s reflected in both the always-smiling servers and the excellent menu.
Try This: Order a cool and creamy Thai iced tea. Start with the scrumptious pan-fried chive dumplings with a spicy soy sauce. For your main course, you’ll love the slices of chicken breast sautéed with fresh ginger in light yellow curry on bed of perfectly steamed broccoli, topped with peanut sauce and accompanied by a bowl of sticky white rice.
