Le Royal Café (Antwerp, Belgium)

Le Royal Cafe, Antwerp, BelgiumFrom the second I laid eyes on Le Royal Café, I knew I had to come back for a meal. I arrived in Antwerp at Central Station, one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. Completed in 1905, this station is simply striking—the impressive train shed, the sumptuous main hall, the arches and marble and dome. Halfway down the marble steps, a side staircase leads to Le Royal Café Brasserie & Restaurant.

In 2013, the former waiting rooms of the train station were converted into one of the world’s most beautiful cafés, and I immediately felt like I was dining in a palace. Neo-baroque façades were restored, terrazzo floors with a mix of marbles were installed, and copper, wood, and stucco, as well as cream and ocher colors, add warmth to this dining establishment. Large mirrors flank the gorgeous clock with gilded festoons and leaves. Huge windows allow abundant natural light to stream in, and modern lights hang from gilded medallions on the coffered ceiling. In the center of the room, an oval cocoon of sorts provides a secluded atmosphere with cozy seating where you can listen to the likes of Frank Sinatra and Fleetwood Mac and dine like you’re a member of royalty.

Fork and KnifeTry This: I was here for a leisurely late lunch, so I sat at one of the set tables with full service rather than lining up at the counter. I ordered up a generous serving of linguine pesto with arugula, pine nuts, sundried tomatoes, and parmesan cheese shavings. For dessert, any of the exquisitely crafted fruit- or chocolate-based offerings will make you happy.
