On pleasant days, you can sit at the outdoor rooftop bar of Alexandria Bier Garden for your imbibing. At other times, make your way into the indoor German-style beer hall or to the pub tables across from the long bar with inlaid blue and white tiles on the front. This is where I found myself on a crisp fall evening, listening to pop music like Maroon 5 and Fleetwood Mac as I perused the menu. From my seat, under the tops of beer barrel tops attached to the wall, I peered through the brick arch openings into the hall where the friendly vibe continued, fueled, no doubt, by some authentic German food and drinks.
Try This: Choose a great beer, like Hofbrau Dunkel, with a full-bodied flavor and hints of caramel, nuts, and candied fruit. Start your meal with the grated and fried golden-brown potato pancakes with cinnamon apple sauce and sour cream. Then go for the Jagerschnitzel—thinly pounded pork, freshly breaded, fried golden, and served with mushroom gravy. Select a couple of sides, like spaetzle and the cucumber salad with carrots and onions.
